Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive validity of scholastic aptitude and academic achievement in predicting higher education academic performance. The subject of this study was 157 undergraduate students in a university consisting of 104 Economics students and 53 Engineering students. The independent variables (predictors) are the scores in three subtests of Indonesian Scholastic Aptitude Test (TBS), namely verbal, quantitative, and Reasoning which represent scholastic aptitude; and three grades of National Exam (UN) in 2005, namely Indonesian, and English, Economics for science science students; Indonesian, English, and Math for science students. The dependent variable (criterion) was the cumulative grade point average in the first four semesters, called IPK. Data were analysed using correlational and regression analyses. The result shows differential predictive validity of scholastic aptitude test scores and UN grades in Economics and Engineering. In Economics, the three TBS subtests scores were significant predictors, while the three UN grades were not significant predictors. In Engineering, scores in two TBS subtests, namely Verbal and Quantitative, and two UN grades, namely English and Math, were significant predictors.
